OMPS : The Science Collection

OMPS, an advanced suite of three hyperspectral instruments, extends the 25-plus year total-ozone and ozone-profile records. These records are used by ozone-assessment researchers and policy makers to track the health of the ozone layer. The improved vertical resolution of OMPS data products allows for better testing and monitoring of the complex chemistry involved in ozone destruction near the troposphere. OMPS products, when combined with cloud predictions, also help produce better ultraviolet index forecasts. Get more information about the OMPS instrument.

Dust Over the United Kingdom
Red dust covering cars in the south this weekend was blown in from the Sahara Desert. A large amount of sand and dust was swept up by storm winds in the desert, around 2000 miles away in northwest Africa. The airborne particles were blown north to the UK where they combined with our warm air and were deposited during showers, shown in these OMPS images.

Around the World in Four Days: Chelyabinsk Meteor Plume
Model and satellite data show that four days after the bolide explosion, the faster, higher portion of the plume (red) had snaked its way entirely around the northern hemisphere and back to Chelyabinsk, Russia. (Ozone Mapping Profiling Suite instrument's Limb Profiler )

Sulfur Dioxide Emissions Over the U.S. From the Kliuchevskoi, Russia, Volcano Eruption
The image shows elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, or SO2, gas over the Eastern United States on October 23, 2013. These SO2 gas levels originated from an eruption of Kliuchevskoi volcano (Kamchatka, Eastern Russia), October 15-20. The volcano emitted SO2 into the jet stream winds in the upper troposphere, which transported the gas rapidly east over the United States.

Smoky Mountain West
Along the Rocky Mountain range, there has been a dearth of snow cover, insect stress in the forests, and a hot spring that has turned into a hot summer. This OMPS map depicts the relative concentration of aerosols in the skies, from many dangerous fires raging across the continental United States .

OMPS Continues More Than 30 Years of Ozone Data
This shows the thickness of the Earth's ozone layer on January 27th from 1982 to 2012. This atmospheric layer protects Earth from dangerous levels of solar ultraviolet radiation.
